Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) : how to deal with it?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine abnormality in reproductive-aged women affecting approximately 5-10% of this population.

PCOS is the most common cause of infertility in women - because it can prevent ovulation.Women who can conceive with PCOS have a higher incidence of miscarriage, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, preeclampsia, and premature delivery.

Causes:

Currently, there is no known cause of PCOS. However, there are associations with excess insulinand genetics.

Symptoms: 

Apart from cysts  (though those are not actually cysts but are potential eggs) on the ovaries, symptoms of PCOS include:

1. Irregular menses

2. Acne, oily skin, and dandruff

3. Obesity

4. Infertility

5. Type 2 diabetes

6. Insulin resistance

7. High cholesterol and triglycerides

8. Sleep apnea

9. High blood pressure

Pregnancy and menopause:

Women who are affected by PCOS may experience the effects throughout their lifetime. There may be an increased risk of miscarriage, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm births.With aging also comes the risk of the secondary health complications related to PCOS, including heart disease.

Management:

Weight reduction, low Carbohydrate diet & need to Consult a gynecologist.
